School’s out. The days are long. It’s vacation time. The Missouri Division of Tourism’s website, VisitMO.com, highlights more than 340 summer events statewide . . . and the list grows daily.

From late spring through summer (for our purposes, May thru Labor Day), Missouri is home to a variety of events and festivals offering a myriad of activities from food to carnivals, artisans to concerts, beer and wine tasting to barbecue cook-offs, car shows to Civil War reenactments, games to fairs—there are events designed to suit every taste and budget. Established in 1967, the Missouri Division of Tourism has worked hard to develop the tourism industry in Missouri to what it is today, an $11.2 billion industry supporting more than 279,000 jobs and generating $627 million in state taxes in Fiscal Year 2011. School’s out. The days are long. It’s vacation time. That doesn’t have to mean an extended getaway and spending lots of money – in the Show-Me State, a vacation can be a single day or weekend when you attend our summer festivals and fun events. The Missouri Division of Tourism’s website, VisitMO.com, highlights more than 340 summer events statewide . . . and the list grows daily.

Pony Express National Museum, St. Joseph

That in mind, we offer a few shining examples of the fun events in Missouri this summer. Enjoy!

The Show-Me State’s northwest region is as diverse as Missouri can offer.

Missouri State Fair, Sedalia

From late spring through summer (for our purposes, May thru Labor Day), Missouri is home to a variety of events and festivals offering a myriad of activities from food to carnivals, artisans to concerts, beer and wine tasting to barbecue cook-offs, car shows to Civil War reenactments, games to fairs—there are events designed to suit every taste and budget. That in mind, we offer a few shining examples of the fun events in Missouri this summer. Enjoy!

As you travel to the events in Missouri’s central region, you’ll encounter interesting places to visit, such as the State Capitol, in Jefferson City; the National Churchill Museum, in Fulton, chronicling the life and times of Sir Winston Churchill; tremendous fishing on two of our largest lakes (Lake of the Ozarks, which has more shoreline than the entire coast of California; and the 55,600-acre Harry S. Truman Reservoir); the history of the famed Route 66 at Lebanon’s Route 66 Museum; the Missouri State Fair, held in Sedalia for 110 years; and plenty of rousing summer events.

Elephant Rocks State Park, Belleview; Photo courtesy Missouri State Parks

From late spring through summer (for our purposes, May thru Labor Day), Missouri is home to a variety of events and festivals offering a myriad of activities from food to carnivals, artisans to concerts, beer and wine tasting to barbecue cook-offs, car shows to Civil War reenactments, games to fairs—there are events designed to suit every taste and budget. That in mind, we offer a few shining examples of the fun events in Missouri this summer. Enjoy!

If you crave adventure in the great outdoors, plus interesting places filled with history, Missouri’s southeast region is your perfect destination. North of Ironton, Elephant Rocks State Park is littered with building-size granite boulders more than a billion years old; get away from it all and relax in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the first National Park designated for the protection of a wild river system (the spring-fed Current River and Jacks Fork River are two of the finest canoeing rivers in America); the 1854 Common Pleas Courthouse, in Cape Girardeau, played a big part in our history, from Indian council meetings to the Civil War; in Ste. Genevieve (America’s oldest French settlement west of the Mississippi), tour La Maison de Guibourd, a French Colonial home built in 1806; be sure to tour Missouri Mines State Historic Site and museum, in Park Hills, where you’ll see displays and remnants of the days when Missouri produced nearly 80 percent of the nation’s lead; and Dillard Mill State Historic Site, in Davisville, Missouri’s best-preserved water-powered gristmill.

The Missouri Division of Tourism (MDT) and VisitMO.com are joining tourism organizations around the country in promoting National Travel and Tourism week, May 5-13, and we’d love to show you what the Show-Me State has to offer.

First set aside by Congress in 1984, the first full week of May is annually recognized as National Travel and Tourism Week to showcase the power of tourism, and to increase awareness of the economic contributions made by the travel and tourism industry.

Tourism is vitally important in Missouri and is one of the key revenue generators for our state. Consider that, in fiscal year 2011, tourism in Missouri was an $11.2 billion industry that generated $627 million in state taxes and supported more than 279,000 jobs and you get a snapshot of how important the industry is on a national level.

In addition:

Direct spending by travelers in the United States generates $1.9 trillion into the economy.

Every U.S. household would pay $1,055 more in taxes without the tax revenue generated by the travel and tourism industry.

Last year in the U.S., direct spending by resident and international travelers averaged $2.2 billion a day; $92.8 million an hour; $1.5 million a minute; $25,700 every second.

“Yes, travelers from around the world bring money into Missouri’s economy, but folks who live and work in Missouri also boost the state’s economy by taking local day-trips and spending time getting to know all Missouri has to offer . . . it is a win-win situation,” said Katie Steele Danner, director of the Missouri Division of Tourism. “Your fun time costs you less and you help support Missouri’s economic strength for everyone’s benefit. That’s why MDT says: Don’t take less of a vacation; take a vacation for less, in Missouri.”

Travel and Tourism Week 2012 Video

Looking for ideas on how to spend your week in Missouri? Spend some time on VisitMO.com to find great trip ideas to inspire you. Whether you enjoy driving across Missouri to see metropolitan areas such as St. Louis, Columbia and Kansas City; a leisurely cruise down Route 66 to see Meramec Caverns in Stanton or the world-famous highway’s birthplace in Springfield; or a getaway where cell phones are frowned upon, you can find it at VisitMO.com. Click here to watch video.

And while you’re in Missouri during National Travel and Tourism Week, be on the lookout for communities, businesses, attractions and tourism entities celebrating with a variety of activities.

In fact, Missouri’s Official Welcome Centers are planning various activities for travelers: hot dogs and refreshments most days; birthday cake on Truman’s birthday (May 8); and handing out free T-shirts, books and other gifts (while they last). In addition, each Welcome Center is planning special activities and surprises for travelers who stop-in:

Rock Port is handing out special treats for all visitors, plus some unique giveaways are planned.

Eagleville Welcome Center is decorating in a western theme, with items and displays highlighting topics such as: Calamity Jane; Jesse James; Dunn Ranch Nature Conservancy Wildlife Area; special photos for the kids (May 11); and door prizes. Bluegrass and country music will fill the air.

Hannibal Welcome Center is featuring reenactors depicting Harry S. Truman and Mark Twain; plus visits by adorable, live Alpacas.

Hayti is serving coffee and donuts daily, and giving away various treats and souvenirs.

Joplin Welcome Center has hot dogs and refreshments on May 10; cookies and juice daily; and the Motorcycle Gold Wing Group is washing car windows for travelers and talking about motorcycle safety.

Kansas City Welcome Center plays a Missouri Jeopardy game, with souvenir prizes; and area tourism industry members are on hand to “talk travel” and hand out gifts.

St. Louis Welcome Center offers Dad’s Famous Scotch-Oatmeal Cookies that are made in St. Louis; gift bags of Missouri products given randomly; and a special gift for every kid.

At the Jefferson City office of the Division of Tourism, located in the Harry S. Truman building, downtown, cookies are served to guests all week.

“Citizens of Missouri have many reasons to celebrate tourism,” says Danner. “Missouri is a multifaceted and beautiful state, with countless family friendly things to experience. We welcome you to explore our hidden treasures and make the 2012 edition of National Travel and Tourism Week the best ever.”

Missouri is a diverse and beautiful state with award-winning attractions, restaurants and events. Missouri most recently received the 2012 Readers Choice Awards on the popular website About.com; readers chose Missouri as their Favorite U.S. State for Camping. More than 200 campgrounds/RV parks are listed on VisitMO.com, the go-to source for planning your Missouri vacation.

Missouri also can showcase some new attractions, including two that opened just in time for Travel and Tourism Week. Sea Life Kansas City Aquarium transports you into an amazing underwater world where you come nose to nose with sharks and have astonishingly close views of everything from humble starfish and seahorses to graceful rays.
Jefferson City, Mo. — Something’s fishy . . . and in Missouri, that’s a good thing. Pros and amateurs alike agree: fishing for sport and recreation is a prime activity in every section of the Show-Me State. That’s a big area to cover, so let’s zero in on Missouri’s central region; a mecca for the twice-a-year fisherman, the tournament pro, the never-done-that-before novice, the go-every-weekend fanatic, and everybody in-between—no matter the age, gender, race or place of birth. If you have a “fishy” desire, central Missouri has a place for you.

Missouri’s official tourism website, VisitMO.com, is loaded with listings and events with a tie-in to fishing. But what’s the first thing you need before you go fishing? No, not a fishing license (although that is required); not a rod and reel or a line and a pole (although, those do come in mighty handy); not even a boat, because fishing from the shore is available almost everywhere; some would say bait, but that’s not what we have in mind—the first thing you need is . . . water.

When you talk public fishing spots in central Missouri, you’re talking lakes, a trout stream, and the mighty Missouri River. Again, that’s a lot to cover, but let’s wade in (pun intended) and hit some high spots. Give your cell phone the day off, set the DVR, load the car with gear and food, and let’s go fishing.

Harry S. Truman Reservoir is Missouri’s largest lake, at 55,600 acres and 958 miles of shoreline. When the lake was

Harry S. Truman Regional Visitor Center, Warsaw

formed and filled with water, many of the trees were left standing, leaving a mostly undeveloped, non-commercialized shoreline. Whether casting a line from shore or from a boat, these stands of trees make Truman Lake an excellent place to fish for crappie, bass, catfish and walleye. Three state records can be claimed by Truman Lake, including a 7 lb. 4 oz. white catfish.

At the end of the northwest arm of the lake, Bucksaw Resort, near Clinton, is a full-service location with lodging, a marina, boat rentals, a floating restaurant, and fishing guide services.

At the eastern end, outside of Warsaw, Long Shoal Marina offers a restaurant, guide services, seasonal slip rentals, and a boat repair shop.

Other than fishing, Truman Lake provides numerous recreational activities: boating; water skiing; sailing; camping; hunting; horseback riding; and hiking; along with primitive and modern camping facilities; numerous lodging choices; and marinas.

Near Warsaw, on a peninsula surrounded by water on three sides, Truman State Park is ideal for camping, swimming, picnicking, hiking, and yes, fishing. The on-site marina has a variety of boats for rent.

If you need a quiet place to spend the night, you won’t go wrong at Fincachivo Lodge and Goat Farm, perfect for fishermen, hunters, nature lovers and folks in need of a break from the hustle and bustle. Accommodations range from a two-bedroom suite with full kitchen and cable TV to rustic cabins in the woods.

North of Tightwad, on the shore of Truman Lake, Hickory Hollow Resort has 16 tree-shaded cabins, plus RV sites and boat storage.

Don’t overlook a visit to Harry S. Truman Visitor Center, atop Kaysinger Bluff, two miles north of Warsaw. The spectacular views of Truman Dam and Reservoir alone are worth the stop, and the exhibits and trails are educational and enjoyable.

Top off your day with some Ozark-style barbecue at The Cook Shack, just north of Iconium. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all scrumptious.

Niangua Branch of the Lake of the Ozarks at Ha Ha Tonka State Park

The Lake of the Ozarks has a slightly smaller surface area of 55,000 acres; however, the lake’s serpentine shape results in more than 1,150 miles of shoreline (that’s more shoreline than the entire pacific coast of California). The main channel of the Osage Arm stretches more than 92 miles from Bagnell Dam to Truman Dam. Referred to as “The Lake,” it differs greatly from Truman Reservoir in that most of the shoreline is developed; but the fishing is just as good—four state record fish have been taken there, including a 56-pound buffalo and a trophy muskellunge that weighed in at 41 lbs. 2 ozs.

The Lake’s thousands of private and public boat-docks provide excellent cover for many species of fish, including bass, crappie, catfish and walleye. There is a variety of shoreline cover, and most of the lake is deep and clear, with coves that taper to shallow areas, excellent for spawning.

Osage Beach Bait & Tackle has everything any angler needs to fish Lake of the Ozarks, whether you’re a serious tournament angler, panfish enthusiast or are running catfish trotlines. Plus, they can service and repair your rod and reel, and give fishing tips.

At Big Ed’s Guide Service, in Lake Ozark, Ed knows bass and where to find ’em. You can take your own gear if you want, or Ed can supply all of the equipment you’ll need to fish from his fully loaded, Coast-Guard-licensed bass boat.

Also Coast-Guard-licensed, Jack’s Guide Service, in Linn Creek, is knowledgeable about the entire lake and every type of fishing. Jack’s policy: If you don’t catch fish, you don’t pay.

If you want to set out on your own, Lake of the Ozarks Marina, west of Camdenton, rents a variety of boats and personal water craft; and, for that all-in-one vacation, they rent luxury houseboats (they’ll teach you how to pilot them).

Lake of the Ozarks State Park is Missouri’s largest state park, at 17,626 acres, including 89 miles of shoreline. In addition to outstanding fishing, the park includes: swimming beaches; marinas; camping and lodging choices; biking, hiking and equestrian trails; and guided tours of Ozark Caverns.

In addition to outstanding year-round fishing, the Lake of the Ozarks is a very popular vacation spot, with activities ranging from a large outlet mall to small gift shops, dozens of golf courses, world-class wineries, restaurants from upscale fine dining to walk-up hamburger stands, and a mind-boggling list of resorts and accommodations.

Osage National Golf Resort, north of Bagnell Dam, boasts three 9-hole sections, two of which were designed by Arnold Palmer. That gives you three 18-hole combinations; plus, you can choose from five sets of tees.

At Sycamore Creek Golf Club, in Osage Beach, rates for 18-holes include a motorized cart. This facility has been voted one of the lake’s favorite golf courses for nine years.

Seven Springs Winery, Linn Creek

In Linn Creek, Seven Springs Winery has a large covered porch and even bigger patio where you can enjoy top-quality Missouri wines and items from their bistro menu. They run a shuttle service (for a fee) to many lake area resorts.

From high on a bluff overlooking Horseshoe Bend, the views at the Blue Heron are spectacular. This fine-dining restaurant sports a casual dress-code and atmosphere.

For a down-home eating experience, stop in for barbecue at Wobbly Boots Road House, in Osage Beach. This crew boasts more than 40 national BBQ awards in the last 20 years.

If you crave relaxation and luxury after a long day of fishing, book a guestroom at the Blackhawk Inn Bed and Breakfast, in Osage Beach. On a bluff overlooking Lake of the Ozarks, the views from the three guestrooms are spectacular; each suite includes a private bath and private balcony.

For family fishing in a home-like setting, Dogwood Acres Resort, in Sunrise Beach, has fully equipped one-, two- and three-bedroom lakeside cabins. They have a covered fishing dock, a separate swim dock, an indoor pool, and boat rentals. Perfect for a family fishing vacation.

For a more laid-back fishing excursion, you can’t beat Lake Pomme de Terre. Though small in comparison, at 7,820 acres and 113 miles of shore, Pomme de Terre has a lot to offer for a lake its size. This is a deep, clear lake; 95 feet at the deepest part. Although the lake offers a wide variety of fish, this lake’s most sought-after trophy, year-round, is the muskellunge.

Pomme de Terre Lake; Photo courtesy Missouri State Parks

Stocked in the lake since 1966 by the Missouri Department of Conservation, muskie is a fierce fighting fish that can reach upward of 45 inches in length and weigh close to 40 pounds; definitely not suited for ultra-light tackle. A challenging fish to catch, they are known for their strength and their tendency to leap from the water in an attempt to dislodge the hook.

Pomme Muskie Guide Service specializes in muskie and walleye fishing. They can supply all the fishing equipment necessary; you need a Missouri fishing license; rain gear; beverages; and lunch/snacks.

The Clearlight Inn, in Hermitage, offers 37 guestrooms, with a restaurant adjacent. The parking lot has electric hook-ups for your boat and trailer.

Sunflower Resort, outside of Wheatland, offers rooms with kitchenettes.

The U.S. Corps of Engineers manages six campgrounds spaced around Pomme de Terre Lake; all offer level campsites, lantern hanging posts, picnic tables and fire rings; five have electrical hookups available, showers, dump stations and playgrounds. Fees are charged at all Corps of Engineers camping areas on Pomme de Terre Lake, except Pittsburg Landing.

Both include a shower house; a beach; picnic areas; trails; coin-op laundry; available water; and a dump station (the showers, water and dump stations are turned off November through March). Both campgrounds require a two-night minimum stay on weekends, April through October. In addition to these items, Pittsburg includes a full-service marina and a shelter house.

Big lakes aren’t your style of fishing? Central Missouri has that covered as well.

Bennett Spring State Park; Photo courtesy Missouri State Parks

The resulting stream offers anglers some of the best rainbow trout fishing in Missouri. The 3,216-acre park includes a trout hatchery, canoeing, hiking trails, camping and a restaurant.

Numerous small streams n the region are wonderful spots for bass fishing.

The Niangua River is one of the best smallmouth streams in the state, in addition to holding trout from Bennett Spring. The deep pools of the Tavern River hold bass and tons of panfish. On the Gasconade River (the longest river that flows entirely within Missouri), every mile holds smallmouth bass fishing that rivals any stream in the state.

Don’t overlook the mighty Missouri River, a haven for large buffalo, carp, gar and huge catfish. The rod and reel world record blue catfish—130 pounds, 57 inches long—was taken from the Missouri River in 2010; that same year, a father-son team hauled in a 99-pound flathead catfish. You might not bring in one that size, but you might.

We’ve only skimmed the surface (another pun intended) of fishing in Missouri’s central region, but this should be enough to get you excited. The key point is, get outdoors and enjoy nature. Whether you catch your limit, or go home empty handed . . . the rod-and-real fun is in the trying.

Hundreds of attractions, restaurants, activities and lodging choices in Missouri’s central region are listed on Missouri’s only official tourism website, VisitMO.com. While browsing the website, you can order a free copy of the 2012 Official Missouri Travel Guide; also available by calling 800-519-4800.
Each year, the spring and summer months bring more travelers to Missouri’s roadways. These months also mark a prime time for road-improvement projects around the state.

That’s why the Missouri Division of Tourism and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) are working together to promote Operation Orange, a work-zone safety effort held April 23-27 in conjunction with National Work Zone Safety Week.

The goal of Operation Orange is to highlight safe-driving practices in all construction areas, whether workers are present or not. As you drive around Missouri, notice all MoDOT work zones are well marked with orange cones and signage for the safety of workers and drivers.

Video courtesy Missouri Dept. of Transportation

To emphasize this orange theme, and remind travelers of its importance, MoDOT created Operation Orange, during which buildings and landmarks throughout the state are decorated in bright orange to highlight the need to drive safely in work zones.

April is a significant month for travel in the Show-Me State, with the Missouri Division of Tourism’s Official Missouri Welcome Centers offering maps and travel information, plus a break from driving, to about 45,000 travelers annually during the month.

These same Welcome Centers, located at key entry points on major highways in Missouri, get into the spirit of the Operation Orange initiative: all seven centers are decorated orange, have special orange displays, and hand out orange-colored treats to travelers.

Missouri is known as a great driving destination, thanks to attractions such as aforementioned Route 66. “The Mother Road,” as it is known, is a popular avenue by which to see America. From St. Louis to Joplin, some 300 miles of the famous route parallel and crisscross I-44 in Missouri. Route 66 in Missouri is loaded with places to experience Missouri hospitality, many of which are listed on the Route 66 page of the Missouri Division of Tourism’s website, VisitMO.com.

Although the highway’s “official” designation may not always be “Route 66,” Missouri has more miles of the old highway still under state management than any other state. Along the route you encounter some of Missouri’s most iconic attractions, such as Route 66 State Park, with exhibits chronicling the history of the legendary highway; Meramec Caverns, once used as a hideout by Jesse James; St. James Winery, Missouri’s largest wine producer; and one of the state’s most-visited attractions, Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, in Springfield.

Another fun highway to explore in Missouri is Highway 36, which runs from St. Joseph in Northwest Missouri to Hannibal in Northeast Missouri. Known as “The Way of American Genius,” this stretch of highway offers a detailed look at some of the people who have had significant meaning to our state – in some cases, the country and the world – by highlighting birth places, childhood homes, and the sites of famous business ventures.

St. Joseph, for example, is home to both the Pony Express National Museum and the Jesse James Home (where the famous outlaw was killed). Heading east from St. Joseph, you find Hamilton, former home of retailer J.C. Penney whose life is commemorated at the J.C. Penney Museum; Chillicothe, site of a collection of murals, including one honoring the city as the Home of Sliced Bread; the Gen. John J. Pershing Boyhood Home State Historic Site in Laclede; Marceline, where former resident Walt Disney is remembered at the Walt Disney Hometown Museum; and Hannibal, where the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum honors the city’s most famous resident.

Whether you’re traveling Route 66 or Highway 36, or any other highway in Missouri, the Missouri Division of Tourism encourages you be alert and be safe, especially in work zones. The ideal Missouri getaway means reconnecting with family and friends and unplugging from the stresses of work life. Let your passengers worry about navigating VisitMO.com’s mobile website (m.VisitMO.com) while you drive; don’t be a distracted driver, especially in work zones.

The Missouri Division of Tourism and MoDOT want your Missouri vacation to be memorable for all the right reasons. So please, drive safe to help ensure you and your fellow motorists have safe and enjoyable travels through the Show-Me State.

To find the location of all active highway work zones, go to MoDOT’s Work Zone Interactive Map. For the location of bridges under construction, see the Better Bridges Map. If you would like to take part and “go orange,” information is available on MoDOT’s Operation Orange website.

About the Missouri Division of Tourism

The Missouri Division of Tourism (MDT) is the official tourism office for the state of Missouri, dedicated to marketing Missouri as a prime travel destination. Established in 1967, the Missouri Division of Tourism has worked hard to develop the tourism industry in Missouri into what it is today, an $11.2 billion industry supporting more than 279,000 jobs and generating $627 million in state taxes in Fiscal Year 2011. For every dollar spent on marketing Missouri as a travel destination in FY11, $57.76 was returned in visitor expenditures.
Jefferson City, Mo. —Look up the word float in the dictionary and you might see definitions that reference remaining on the surface of the water without sinking or moving in a casual way. Both are correct, but in Missouri, we define float in simpler terms: Fun. Floating in Missouri means setting off on a cool, spring-fed river or stream, aboard a canoe, kayak, inner tube or small raft, and “floating” with the current. It is a relaxing, yet exhilarating individual, group or family pastime … and it isn’t hard. There are many “floating” locations listed on VisitMO.com.

Watch video

Three pristine, secluded, backcountry rivers in southeast Missouri are protected by public law. They flow past towering bluffs and untouched forests, with almost no public or private developments along their banks. They are ideally suited for breathtaking float trips, streamside camping, swimming, hiking and great fishing. Novice to expert, singly and in groups, you can enjoy floats as short as a couple of hours, a day or two, or as long as a week.

In 1964, the United States Congress created the Ozark National Scenic Riverways in southeast Missouri. Encompassing more than 80,000 acres in the Ozarks, this is America’s first National Park designated for the protection of a wild river system: Missouri’s Current River and Jacks Fork River. The National Park Service considers these to be two of the clearest and most beautiful spring-fed rivers in the United States. This is a prime outdoors recreational area in southeast Missouri.

Montauk State Park, Salem

Seven springs in Montauk State Park form the headwaters of the Current River. Regular stocking of rainbow trout provides excellent fishing, March thru October. The park, 21 miles southwest of Salem, features an old gristmill, campgrounds, cabins, a dining lodge, hiking trails, and picnicking facilities.

The Missouri Department of Conservation maintains the Current River Conservation Area, three miles west of Ellington. Predominantly forested, the area features access to the Current River, picnic areas, river and pond fishing, a 1.5-mile hiking trail, archery and shooting ranges (not staffed), and abundant bird watching.

Big Spring, Van Buren

Ozark National Scenic Riverways is home to some of the largest freshwater springs in the country; Big Spring, four miles south of Van Buren, is one of the largest in the world, with an average daily output exceeding 280 million gallons—enough to fill an NFL football stadium every day.

More than 300 caves are found within the borders of Ozark National Scenic Riverways, eight of them have been designated as outstanding natural features. Fourteen miles north of Eminence, National Park Service Rangers conduct lantern-light tours of Round Spring Cavern.

Floating (ah, you knew there was a tie-in coming)—mostly by canoe, but also by kayak, inner tube and raft—is the most popular activity within the Riverways, followed by camping, swimming, hunting, fishing, hiking and backpacking, horseback riding, and sightseeing . . . though not necessarily in that order. There are more than 110 species of fish, 195 types of birds (including year-round bald eagles), and 58 varieties of mammals in the park, along with 25 kinds of snakes.

Arranging a float trip is easy, just contact one of the many outfitters along and near the Riverways and they’ll handle all the details. These outfitters can supply canoes (kayaks, et cetera), all related equipment, and training if needed; all you need to take is food, drink and a dry change of clothes, plus camping gear if you plan on spending the night.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways

Several outfitters serve the rivers in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Outfitters will shuttle you upriver, so you can float back to your car; or shuttle you back to your car from a designated pick-up point. Operating seasons and hours may differ, so it is always a good idea to check first. It is advisable to make reservations in advance, although most locations can accommodate last-minute floaters. If you plan on camping on the outfitter’s property, reservations are highly recommended.

In addition to floating activities, many of the businesses listed below offer camping, showers, and a general store for supplies and fishing licenses; some have cabins; some have a restaurant on-site.

Also in the southeast region, the Eleven Point River is the only Missouri river which is part of the congressionally designated National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The National Wild and Scenic Rivers System was created by Congress in 1968, to preserve certain rivers in the U.S. that have outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values.

The Eleven Point flows 44.4 miles through the Mark Twain National Forest. A highlight is Greer Spring, the second-largest spring in Missouri, which has an average daily flow of 222 million gallons. Greer is reachable from the river and from a land-based trailhead, on Route 19, eight miles north of Alton. The trailhead offers picnicking, and trails for hiking, biking, backpacking and equestrian use; a one-mile trail leads to the spring. If you plan to float the Eleven Point, try these outfitters.

These three rivers are much less crowded during the off season (April-May and September-October, and weekdays during the summer). Springtime and early fall are beautiful times to float; but don’t exclude winter, when the landscape is dramatic. Have your own canoe? Most outfitters will be glad to accommodate you for shuttle services and supplies.

These are by no means the only floatable rivers in Missouri. Canoe and floating outfitters operate on 29 rivers and streams throughout the state. The Missouri Canoe and Floaters Associationwebsite is loaded with details and lists of outfitters, floatable streams, water conditions, restrictions, and general “floating” information

Important Notes:

Under Missouri law, glass containers of any kind and pressed-foam type coolers are prohibited on or within 50 feet of all rivers, trails and caves.

Don’t take firewood with you! Tree-killing pests such as emerald ash borers, Asian longhorned beetles, and gypsy moths can hide in the wood you carry from other locations. There is a Firewood Movement Restriction Program in force. If you are planning to visit any park or camping site, buy firewood locally or use “dead and down” firewood found within the park.

Remember, your life jacket won’t save you if you aren’t wearing it.

In addition to these great outdoor adventures, Missouri’s southeast region is loaded with things to do, attractions, restaurants and places to stay. Find details and listings at Missouri’s only official tourism website, VisitMO.com. While browsing the website, you can order a free copy of the 2012 Official Missouri Travel Guide; also available by calling 800-519-4800. And yes, there is a free app for that—in iTunes: “Official Missouri Travel Guide.”.

About the Missouri Division of Tourism
The Missouri Division of Tourism (MDT) is the official tourism office for the state of Missouri dedicated to marketing Missouri as a premier travel destination. Established in 1967, the Missouri Division of Tourism has worked hard to develop the tourism industry in Missouri to what it is today, an $11.2 billion industry supporting more than 279,000 jobs and generating $627 million in state taxes in Fiscal Year 2011. For every dollar spent on marketing Missouri as a travel destination in FY11, $57.76 was returned in visitor expenditures.
