Jefferson City, Mo. — Black History Month is observed in February. It gives the Show-Me State a chance to spotlight the historical achievements and triumphs of notable black Missourians, and the impact they had on the heritage and culture of Missouri, America and the world.

The Federal Courthouse in St. Louis, now known as The Old Courthouse, plays an important role in black history. This was the site of the trials of Dred and Harriet Scott, who sued the federal government for their freedom. The case eventually made it to the U.S. Supreme Court, where, on March 6, 1857, Dred Scott and his family were denied their freedom. The court ruled seven to two against Scott, finding no person of African ancestry could claim citizenship in the United States, and therefore Scott could not bring suit in federal court. The court’s ruling is said to be among the chief causes of the Civil War.

On February 25, 2012, Black History Month at Jefferson National Expansion Memorial is an afternoon of special presentations at the Old Courthouse, including a reenactment of the Dred Scott trial.

The Old Courthouse is home to the “Legacy of Courage” exhibit and the “Slavery on Trial” video; both focus on the Dred Scott case. The Old Courthouse, operated by the National Parks Service, is part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, which includes the iconic Gateway Arch and the Museum of Westward Expansion.

On October 27-29, 1862, the first Civil War skirmish involving black American soldiers took place near Butler. In the Battle of Island Mound, the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteers was mustered to break up a guerrilla army and Confederate recruiters. The skirmish took place three months before the Emancipation Proclamation, which authorized the enlistment of black soldiers. The Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site (scheduled to open in fall 2012) includes “Camp Africa,” the home and farm of Southern sympathizer, Enoch Toothman, where the Infantry camped.

Take a bicycle ride or enjoy a walk along the Riverfront Trail to the Mary Meachum Freedom Crossingsite, which is three miles north of the Gateway Arch. Listed on the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, the site pays tribute to Mary Meachum, a free woman of color who, in May 1855, accompanied a group of runaway slaves as they attempted to cross the Mississippi River to reach freedom in Illinois (most were caught and returned to their owners).

One of Missouri’s most prominent native sons was known as the “Plant Doctor.” As a child, he tended his secret garden while observing the operations of a 19th century farm. Today, his birthplace, the George Washington Carver National Monument, near Diamond, covers some 240 acres and features an on-site lab where modern-day staff members conduct science experiments.

George Washington Carver became a world-renowned agricultural scientist. Among his many accomplishments, he developed and promoted more than 100 products made from peanuts, including paints, cosmetics, dyes, plastics, biofuel, and nitroglycerin. He pioneered the process of restoring nitrogen to the soil by systematic crop rotation. He received numerous honors for his work, including a garden area named in his honor at the Missouri Botanical Garden, where you find a commemorative statue and material about his work.

In Kansas City, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is dedicated to the players who helped the league flourish from its post Civil-War beginnings until its demise in the 1960s. Video presentations and memorabilia in the 10,000 square-foot multimedia exhibit chronicle the history and heroes of the league. Located on the same site, the American Jazz Museum showcases the history of jazz and Kansas City’s role as a hotbed for early jazz performers.

The Griot Museum of Black History and Culture, St. Louis

The Griot Museum of Black History, in St. Louis, offers historical information and life-sized, wax likenesses of African-Americans whose activities influenced the state and nation. In some African countries, the “griot,” (pronounced: Gree-Oh) is a highly respected member of the community who collects, shares and preserves the stories and objects of the community. The facilities include an authentic slave cabin, originally built on the Wright–Smith Plantation in Jonesburg, Missouri; a model section of a ship used to transport Africans to America during the Transatlantic Slave Trade; plus art, artifacts and memorabilia.

In 1866, Lincoln University was founded in Jefferson City by soldiers from the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantries. In the quadrangle, the Soldiers Memorial Plaza includes an impressive monument depicting the soldiers and officers who embraced the vision of education for all Americans.

The Black Archives Museum, in St. Joseph, houses exhibits on topics ranging from musicians to desegregation, the Underground Railroad to education, and sports to African-American history in St. Joseph. A highlight is the Hall of Fame, created to showcase the achievements and contributions of St. Joseph’s African-American citizens.

Eugene Field House & St. Louis Toy Museum

The Eugene Field House, in St. Louis, presents “A Room Divided,” depicting life in the Midwestern city, inside and outside of slavery. With hands-on pieces and a one-of-a-kind dollhouse from 1837, the exhibit is full of information concerning the unique situation St. Louis faced, prior to the Civil War: slave owners and anti-slavery sympathizers living side by side; a city that was home to slaves and free blacks; and a northern city inside a slave state. The house was home to Roswell M. Field, the attorney who took Dred Scott’s freedom suit into the federal courts.

In a compelling exhibit at the Missouri History Museum, in St. Louis, The Civil War in Missouri uses artifacts, imagery and interactive elements to tell the story of a territory bitterly divided between pro-slavery secessionists and those determined to preserve the Union; and the residents, free and enslaved, who experienced and influenced the war.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Missouri History Museum has launched a website, CivilWarMO, which offers in-depth information on the Civil War in Missouri. The Missouri Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission has opened a website, MoCivilWar150, to foster an inclusive spirit of reconciliation that appropriately recognizes the experiences and points of view of all people affected by the Civil War and its aftermath.

These are but a few examples of the places and events concerning Black History Month in the Show-Me State.
Cuba, Mo. — Race director Brad Austin promises the Route 66 Race to the Rocker on March 31 will be bigger and better this year. This is the fourth year for the community event, which pulls runners from all over the Midwest to take part in the four-mile race that starts at the Mizell Funeral Home and continues on Route 66 to the Fanning US 66 Outpost General Store, home of the Guinness World’s Record Largest Rocking Chair. At more than 42-feet-tall, the rocker is all for bigger and better.

The Friday Night Business and Fitness Expo on March 30 will be held at the Cuba High School in order to provide better parking and plenty of room for race sponsors to set up informational/merchandise tables. Frisco’s Grill is furnishing all the food; Cuba 4-H groups are going to offer a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. so runners can carb-up before Saturday’s rain or shine 9 a.m. race. Participants can pick up race packets and T-shirts on Friday evening or Saturday morning; as well as bring a canned food or personal hygiene item to benefit the food bank and the Friday Backpack for Kids program.

On Saturday morning, the Cuba High School parking lot will be available for parking before the race; shuttle buses will take runners to the race registration area beginning at 7:30 a.m. More buses will be available this year for both pre- and post-race shuttles. Bag drops are available at the beginning of the race with pickup at the Rocker finish area.

There will be music and other events along the course to inspire runners. Along with an orange Race to the Rocker T-shirt, runners will receive Cuba’s signature treat of two baby cakes from the Route 66 Fudge Shop. In addition, race division winners will get Route 66 Race to the Rocker candy bars.

Big River Running, from St. Louis, will provide race numbers with chip timing and will post times and results online. Both lanes of Route 66 will be closed from Kinder Cemetery to the rocker between 8:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. The Missouri Highway Patrol as well as local fire, EMT, and police officials will help with course management.

Almost $35,000 for kids’ fitness/health projects was raised in the first three races. This year’s funds will go to the Friday Backpacks for Kids Program; two scholarships for track and cross country students; purchase or rehabilitation of weight room equipment; and ongoing investigation of the Rails to Trails program.

“We are signing up volunteers and sponsors to make it all happen and run smoothly.” Austin says. “This race is a community event and effort, and Cuba’s wonderful support has allowed the race to grow each year and raise so much for our kids and their health and fitness.”

Race organizers have set a goal of 1,000 runners/walkers to make it the largest race to date. The race is open to all ability levels and age groups. Faster runners will be placed in the front of the pack to ensure the safety of all. Feel free to costume up to make it a colorful race. Bring your cameras and spend some time in the “Route 66 Mural City” after the race.

Branson, Mo — Her real name was Margaret “Maggie” Tobin Brown, but the world knew her best as the irascible, indestructible Unsinkable “Molly” Brown. “Beginning January 2012, hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Titanic Museum Attraction in Branson, Missouri, will explore the myth, lore and legacy of this larger-than-life Titanic heroine,” announces John Joslyn, owner of the Titanic Museum Attractions and leader of the first private expedition’s dive to the wreck site.

According to Brown’s great-granddaughter, Helen Benziger, “My great-grandmother was born in 1867 in Hannibal, Missouri. She made a name for herself in Denver, Colorado, and around the world, with an indomitable spirit that charmed European society and helped her survive the Titanic disaster.

“I was about 13 years old, sitting in a darkened movie theater watching Debbie Reynolds in The Unsinkable Molly Brown, when my mother finally told me that the fictional Molly Brown on screen was, in reality, based on the life of my great-grandmother, Margaret Tobin Brown. Since that unbelievable moment, I have devoted much of my life to keeping her legacy alive.

“Now, I’m thrilled and excited to know that the extensive Molly Brown Artifact Collection will have a new home at the Titanic Museum Attraction in Branson, Missouri, not too far from where my great-grandmother was born,” Benziger adds.

Featured pieces in the collection include furniture, crystal glassware from Ireland, artwork, photographs, Titanic memorabilia and many other treasures gathered from around the world to grace the Denver mansion Maggie shared with her millionaire mining husband, J.J. Brown.

And for the first time anywhere…

Museum attraction guests will see original costumes worn by Debbie Reynolds in the movie The Unsinkable Molly Brown, including the pale-green, elaborately beaded silk gown she wore while celebrating her birthday abroad in Paris.

“Helen Benziger was in Branson to help us launch the museum attraction in 2006. She inspired us all,” says Joslyn, “and we’re honored to welcome her back Thursday, March 22, 2012, to dedicate our new gallery, entirely devoted to her great-grandmother.

The Titanic Museum Attractions in Branson, Mo. open daily at 9 a.m. Reservations are strongly suggested, as many dates sell out entirely. Tickets may be purchased online at titanicattraction.com or by phone at 800-381-7670.

Cedar Bay Entertainment owns and operates Titanic Museum Attractions in Branson, Mo., and Pigeon Forge, Tenn. A privately owned-and-operated entertainment and development company, Cedar Bay is headquartered in Branson, site of its first Titanic Museum Attraction. Titanic Branson has welcomed aboard more than four million guests, while Titanic Pigeon Forge boards approximately 100,000 “passengers” a month.

Jefferson City, Mo. — You’ve heard it many times, especially when you encounter someone you haven’t seen for a while. “Hey, what’s new?” The response is usually, “Aw, not much.” But, if you ask the Missouri Division of Tourism that question, the answer is a bit longer. There are new attractions and shows opening all the time, plus new exhibits, anniversaries, and new first-time events. You notice a pattern here—the operative word is, new. Although there are a lot of interesting, fun attractions and events throughout the year in Missouri, we would like to introduce you to a sampling of new (there’s that word again) places and happenings designed to entertain visitors to and in the Show-Me State.

New Attractions to Visit

Places to go and things to see just keep expanding in Missouri. No matter what region of the state you visit, there is always something to keep you busy. Here are some attractions you can try for the first time.

In May 2011, the Missouri Division of Tourism opened the Hayti Official Welcome Center, located beside northbound I-55, at mile marker 20.2, in southeast Missouri near Hayti. It replaced the New Madrid Welcome Center. Facilities include restrooms, picnic areas, a playground, benches, shade trees, landscaped lawns and walking trails. The site offers easy access, with large parking areas for passenger cars and motorcycles, and a separate parking lot for RVs, buses and trucks.

The World Chess Hall of Fame opened September 9, 2011, in a historic 15,900 square-foot residence-turned-museum in St. Louis. The facility features the U.S. and World Chess Halls of Fame; displays of artifacts from the permanent collection; and temporary exhibitions highlighting the great players, historic games, and rich cultural history of chess.

In September 2011, Kansas City welcomed the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. The Kauffman Center is a mega-modern, state-of-the-art facility, encompassing two awe-inspiring performance venues: The 1,800-seat Muriel Kauffman Theatre and the 1,600-seat Helzberg Hall. These theatres host Broadway production companies, renowned orchestras and bands, top national and international entertainers, artists and performance troupes. Also, the Kauffman Center serves as the home performance venue for the Kansas City Ballet, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra.

In downtown St. Louis, the Peabody Opera House has been restored to its original splendor; the historic building originally opened in 1934 as the Municipal Auditorium. It reopened October 1, 2011, as The Peabody. This downtown performing arts and cultural center, with a 3,200-seat main theater, hosts special events, touring shows and concerts headlining mega-stars.

The Old Dutch Hotel and Tavern, in Washington, features a 14-guestroom hotel on the two floors above street-level; and The Tavern on the ground floor, offering a full menu. The completely renovated facilities are in a historical building.

Viandel Vineyard is a new winery in Mountain View, where you can relax in the quiet of Missouri’s Ozark mountain woodlands. The farmstead, which was once an apple orchard, has been developed into a sophisticated winery with a comfortable farmhouse tasting room.

Springfield has a new IMAX screen, at the Springfield 11 Theatres. The IMAX screen is four stories high and 70 feet wide; the theatre seats 300.

In south-central Missouri, various activities, fun events and tours are held at the restored 1886 Summersville Mill, on the east side of Summersville. Because Summersville did not have access to a spring, a steam engine originally powered the plant; water came from a pond that still exists behind the mill. The mill still has its machinery.

New and Special Events for 2012

Missouri is blessed with thousands, maybe hundreds-of-thousands of wonderful events every year. There is literally something for everyone.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — This morning, Kansas City hit the airwaves of NBC’s “Today” show for the second time in three months. Saveur, one of the nation’s top culinary magazines, announced its Top Food Trends for 2012— proclaiming Kansas City as America’s next great culinary destination for 2012. To watch the clip featuring Kansas City and The American Restaurant, click here.

The announcement was made by James Oseland, editor-in-chief of Saveur and a judge on Bravo’s “Top Chef Masters.” “We’ve long thought of Kansas City as a good barbecue town,” Oseland said, “but its high-end dining is really on the rise.”

This high-profile ranking is a result of a 2011 media visit hosted by the Kansas City CVA. The organization’s PR department hosted Saveur Executive Editor Todd Coleman in March and also contributed messaging for today’s broadcast story.

Praise for Kansas City continued on the “Today” show blog, also released this morning. In it, Oseland said Kansas City is “going to have its moment in 2012.”

“This Midwestern city has a deep-rooted food culture that’s been around for well over a century, one that’s now poised to reinvigorate itself and position the city as a new culinary destination. We all know about Kansas City’s reputation as a great barbecue town, but recently there’s been a fantastic wave of smart, new high-end cooking that’s been lighting a fire in the heart of America,” the story says. “Laying the foundation are chefs like Debbie Gold, Celina Tio, and Colby Garrelts, whose restaurants … are galvanizing the area’s independent and organic farmers and producers, and inspiring Kansas City’s next generation of chefs to reach for new heights.”

Sedalia, Mo. – Missouri’s state fair, an event held each August in Sedalia, Mo., has been recognized as one of the best in the world by the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE), Gov. Jay Nixon and Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe announced today.

“It is outstanding to see Missouri’s premiere agricultural showcase recognized on an international scale,” said Gov. Nixon. “Agriculture is the backbone of Missouri’s economy, and I congratulate the individuals whose hard work and dedication make the Missouri State Fair possible each year.”

During the recent IAFE convention, the Missouri State Fair was recognized for excellence in competitive events, agricultural events and exhibitions and communications efforts. Among the more than 20 honors received, the Missouri State Fair was recognized for Excellence in Competitive Exhibits. The Fair’s awards also included first place recognition for the Military Appreciation Day event, which hosted thousands of Missourians paying tribute to active duty service men and women and veterans, as well as top recognition for youth involvement in livestock care and exhibition.

“These honors acknowledge the concerted efforts made by the Missouri State Fair to showcase Missouri agriculture and affirm that our celebration of Missouri agriculture is among the best in the U.S. as well as internationally,” Wolfe said.

The Missouri State Fair is one of IAFE’s more than 3,000 domestic and international members. The association is based in Springfield, Mo. and the annual conference and tradeshow is one of the largest events serving fairs, shows, festivals and exhibitions throughout the world. The Missouri State Fair vied for awards with U.S. and international fairs and festivals with similar attendance between 250,001 and 500,000.

The 2012 Missouri State Fair will be held August 9-19 in Sedalia. For more information about the Fair, and the full list of awards, visit MoStateFair.com.

Branson, Mo. — After two decades, Yakov Smirnoff announces that 2012 will be his last full season performing at his Branson theatre and that he will be touring the country in 2013 with his hilariously-funny standup comedy show. Smirnoff will continue to call Branson his home and remain actively involved in the community and his theatre.

His newest production, Happily Ever Laughter, builds on his critically acclaimed one-man Broadway show, about which The New York Times said, “His Broadway show is splendidly funny, and a generous display of warmhearted, high-quality humor.” His longevity in Branson has given him a chance to evolve as an entertainer, writer and producer but Smirnoff relishes the opportunity to get back to his comedic roots. Innovative and funny standup comedy that reveals how to sustain love and laughter in relationships is supported with knowledge from his master’s degree in psychology.

Though he is celebrating his 20th and his last full season performing the Yakov LIVE! production, Smirnoff will continue to produce world-class entertainment for his Branson theatre. He recently announced the five-year run of a brand new show that was designed especially for Branson called Brady Brunch with Barry Williams, the real Greg Brady from the 1970s hit television show The Brady Bunch.

“Actor, Barry Williams, who portrayed Greg Brady in America’s best-loved television series The Brady Bunch, is a fantastic entertainer” said Smirnoff. “It’s a privilege to produce his Branson multimedia variety show. I love Branson! It’s a great place to live. I’ve been here for 19 years, and I never lock my car. I don’t know where it is…”

About Yakov Smirnoff:

America’s favorite Russian comedian, Yakov Smirnoff has been a mainstay in the entertainment scene since the late 1970s. By the mid 1980s he had several films and television appearances under his belt, joining the ranks of icons Robin Williams and Tom Hanks. After performing in his own 2,000 seat Branson, Mo., theatre for years, in 2003 he landed on Broadway performing in his critically acclaimed, one-man show As Long As We Both Shall Laugh. In addition to his standup comedy, television, film and stage success, he has written several books, recorded CDs, DVDs, and is a talented artist. In 2006, Smirnoff received his master’s degree in psychology from the Ivy-League University of Pennsylvania. While performing more than 200 shows each year at his Branson theatre, he also speaks to business groups, presents seminars, is a published columnist for national magazines, and is a professor teaching classes about the relationship of Love and Laughter at Missouri State University and Drury University. He’s taking his Happily Ever Laughter show on the road where audiences across America will see that you can live Happily Ever Laughter and laugh your Yak-off!

Jefferson City, Mo. – Stunning. Beautiful. Unique. Exquisite.

Those are a few of the words used to describe the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, which was chosen to represent the Show-Me State on the cover of the 2012 Official Missouri Travel Guide, published by the Missouri Division of Tourism (MDT).

The 2012 Official Missouri Travel Guide, a 160-page travel companion with information on everything from attractions and must-see sites to lodging options and regional maps, now is available.

Although we’re still a few weeks away from the official start of winter, now is a great time to start planning your summer vacation. The Official Missouri Travel Guide can help; you can pick it up at a variety of locations across Missouri, including MDT’s seven Official Welcome Centers, MDT’s Affiliate Welcome Centers, local chambers of commerce, and convention and visitors bureaus. If you’d like to order a copy of the 2012 Official Missouri Travel Guide, you can do so online at VisitMO.com, and by calling 800-519-4800.

“Although we live in an era of smart phones and GPS devices, there’s something comforting about having the printed Travel Guide to carry along with you on a trip,” says Katie Steele Danner, director of the Missouri Division of Tourism. “Our Travel Guide offers information about the unique and affordable places for visitors to enjoy in Missouri, whether they’re interested in the outdoors or museums, or just looking for a place to spend a quiet weekend.”

In addition to listings of tourism-related businesses around Missouri, the Travel Guide features dozens of color photos showcasing the state’s tourism assets. There are also area feature stories on each of Missouri’s five vacation regions: Northwest, Northeast, Central, Southeast and Southwest, along with stories related to live entertainment venues, things you may not know about Missouri, and destinations that feature ziplines, scuba diving and haunted sites.

For more information about the 2012 Official Missouri Travel Guide, please contact MDT Communications Director Sarah Luebbert at 573-522-5501 or at Sarah.Luebbert@ded.mo.gov.

The Missouri Division of Tourism (MDT) is the official tourism office for the state of Missouri dedicated to marketing Missouri as a premier travel destination. Established in 1967, the Missouri Division of Tourism has worked hard to develop the tourism industry in Missouri to what it is today, an $11.4 billion industry supporting more than 281,000 jobs and generating $900 million in state and local taxes in Fiscal Year 2010. For every dollar spent on marketing Missouri as a travel destination in FY10, $53 was returned in visitor expenditures.
